The piece was made up on payment for the 80th anniversary of the Budapest Philharmonic Modern society. It is structured on persons songs of Galánta (now part of Slovakia), where Kodály lived for many yrs.1The composer said: 'At that period there existed a popular Gypsy music group.This was the 1st 'orchestral' sonority that arrived to the ears of the child.About 1800 some publications of Hungarian dances were released in Vienna, one of which contained songs 'after several Gypsies from Galánta'.the composer offers taken his principal styles from these outdated periodicals'.2Most of the pieces used had been of theverbunkosdesign - originally developed as armed forces recruiting songs, but generalizing to a Hungarian people custom in the early 1800s.1Kodály saw the piece as a 'sequel' to his 1927 piano selection (later orchestrated)Dances of Marosszée.2
